The Suzuki Music School of Westport
  ...discovering joy through music

About the School
Founded in 1997 the Suzuki Music School of Westport has grown from humble beginnings in a church hall to a community music school with over 300 students. We offer highly specialised instruction in voice, violin, viola, cello, flute, guitar and piano, music theory chamber music and large ensemble. We also offer an array of general music classes for young children under six, including

Music Together and our own pre-Suzuki class Suzuki Tots

The school is run as a non-profit organization with a Board of Directors, Music Director and administrative staff. We provide a faculty trained in the Suzuki Method and highly experienced as both teachers and performers. Each year the school supports faculty to pursue professional renewal through training courses in their specialist field. In this way our curriculum remains fresh and new.

SMSW offers fall, spring and summer terms that run in tandem with the Westport school system. Student recitals take place in the fall and spring terms. The school enhances the learning experience with a series of annual events that has been widely recognized for their innovative and exciting nature. The school calendar includes an annual schoolwide concert which this year will be at the Lincoln Center in New York. Previous school concerts have been at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Norwalk Concert Hall. In addition, students have the opportunity to perform at major venues around Fairfield County, the Steinway Concert Room, the Burr Mansion, Westport Library, Westport Town Hall, Norwalk Town Hall and Concert Hall. But not all our performances are serious concert events! The school has a fun social calendar in which music is part of every day life. We march and play Suzuki style in the Westport Memorial Day Parade, we perform at Earthplace, Santa's House, the Bluefish Stadium and in seasonal events such as our "spooky Suzuki concert", a Halloween costume event at the Westport Library. We encourage our students to share their gifts with the wider community. Music is for everyone and at the Suzuki Music School of Westport we like our students to discover the joy of music in their lives by giving generously to others.

In addition to the opportunities for students to share their music in public, we also offer an outstanding array of master classes and workshops that has been recognized nationally. The Da Capo Visiting Artist Series, brings internationally recognized artists and teachers to the school for master classes, workshops and a series of exciting concerts that are open to the public. SMSW also offers a family concert series of short informal concerts in the comfort of its own Recital Room. The SMSW Pillow Concerts feature regional artists and faculty members in an informal family style concert.
